Abstract

First president of Shiseido who, while shaping corporate culture, established the photographic institution of Japan through founding the Sha-shin Geijutsu-sha and Shiseido Gallery. He supported modern Japanese photography from both institution-building and expressive practice.

What this photographer changed

Beyond making his own art photographs, Fukuhara — through founding the Shashin Geijutsu-sha and establishing the Shiseido Gallery — built institutional spaces in Japan where photography could be received as art. Engaging from both expression and institution, his activity prepared the ground for Japanese modern photography to circulate as fine art.

§ 01 / 03 Biography

Shinzo Fukuhara was born in Tokyo in 1883, studied in Europe and America as the son of Shiseido's founder, and took over the management of Shiseido after his father. *1 During his time abroad he deepened his interest in the relationship between photography and art, and after returning to Japan he pursued management and photographic/cultural activity in parallel. *2 In 1921 he organised the Sha-shin Geijutsu-sha (Photographic Art Society) with the purpose of promoting and researching photographic art, working to build the institutional basis for positioning photography as a modern artistic culture. *3

In 1919 he established the Shiseido Gallery, which, while a commercial enterprise space, functioned as a cultural space connecting art, design, photography and advertising. *4 In 1923 he published "Light and Its Tone," an important photographic theory text setting out an aesthetic theory of photography based on light and tone. The Grey Art Museum (NYU) materials provide an important point of reference organising these activities. *5 He died in 1948. *6

§ 02 / 03 Expression / method

As an institution builder

To think about Fukuhara's expression, it is necessary to address both the soft tonal quality of his photographic works and his role as an institution builder simultaneously. *7 Drawing on his time in Europe and America and the corporate culture of Shiseido, he worked to elevate photography from mere documentation or hobby to a medium bearing modern aesthetic values. The art photography he envisioned was not limited to imitation of pictorialism but a conception of comprehensive visual culture encompassing light, tone, printing, exhibition space and magazine culture. An exhibition marking the Shiseido Gallery's centenary reconsidered Fukuhara as an artist of social creation beyond corporate management. *8

Fukuhara's importance lies not only in the individual works he made but in the fact that he built the institutions through which photography could be received. The Shiseido Gallery, while a commercial enterprise space, functioned as a cultural apparatus for modern Japan connecting art, design, photography and advertising. The activities of the Sha-shin Geijutsu-sha and his theoretical writings also connect to the environment in which Yasuzo Nojima, Iwata Nakayama and Nakaji Yasui worked. *9

The aesthetics of light and "Light and Its Tone"

"Light and Its Tone," published in 1923, is a text exploring theoretically the relationship between light and tone in photography and occupies an important position in the formation of Japanese photographic theory. *10 The soft light and gentle tones in Fukuhara's works can be read not as mere personal preference but as an aesthetic produced between modern urban consumer culture and art photography. The Shiseido press release PDF can be consulted as materials organising the relationship between this theory and his works. *11

Art Platform Japan's Fukuhara Shinzo page functions as a database for confirming his position in Japan's art institutions. *12 ToMuCo (the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art collection-linked database) also registers related works by Fukuhara. *13

Shiseido Gallery and the connection of corporate culture

The establishment of the Shiseido Gallery represents a uniquely modern Japanese model of a commercial corporation creating cultural space. *14 The connection between the business of cosmetics and fragrance and the values of light, beauty and art both shaped Shiseido's brand identity and created a cultural base in which commerce and art coexisted within modern Japanese visual culture. The bibliographic reference route via French-language sources on the Société photographique japonaise indicates the international referenceability of Japanese modern photography. *15

§ 03 / 03 Criticism and reception

Shiseido Gallery exhibitions and research materials remain the main venue for the re-evaluation of Fukuhara Shinzo. *16 CiNii Research holds numerous research articles. *17 NDL Search holds extensive related bibliographic materials. *18 Fragmentary material references are also possible at the British Museum and ICP Library. *19 The Art Platform Japan database allows his position in Japan's art institutions to be confirmed. Within photographic history, the distinctive character of his contribution becomes visible when institution-building — the creation of the very spaces that support photographic culture — is treated as a critical achievement alongside the evaluation of individual works. *20 The fact that Fukuhara worked simultaneously through the multiple channels of a corporation, a gallery, publishing and photographic theory makes his case an important reference point in the institutional history of modern Japanese culture for thinking about the relationship between individuals and organisations.
